Key educational leaders and administrators representing schools from eight states and the District of Columbia (Arizona School for the Deaf, Delaware School for the Deaf, Gallaudet University’s Clerc Center, Indiana School for the Deaf, Kansas School for the Deaf, New Mexico School for the Deaf, Penny Road Elementary in North Carolina, Utah School for the Deaf and Blind, and Wisconsin Educational Services Program-Deaf and Hard of Hearing) gathered at Gallaudet July 11 to 16 for the 7th Annual Enhancing Deaf Education: Language Planning and Leadership seminar.

Second International Deaf Referee Clinic Held at Gallaudet

The second International Deaf Referee Clinic brought 13 deaf referees from all over the world to Gallaudet July 14 to 18. Like the first such gathering in Stockholm, Sweden, in 2007, it also became a big success. The clinic was arranged by the Deaf International Basketball Federation (DIBF) in cooperation with and support from USA Deaf Basketball. The organizers extended thanks to the administration of Gallaudet and Wendy Wiatrowski, program coordinator for summer and enrichment programs in the College of Professional Studies and Outreach, for use of the facilities.

Summer course brings young deaf-blind leaders to Kendall Green

Advocacy and leadership were the focus of a recent summer course from the College of Professional Studies and Outreach’s (CPSO) Burstein Leadership Institute. “Deaf-Blind Young Adults in Action (DBYAA)” brought together 12 aspiring leaders from around the country, as well as uniting several important institutions. CPSO teamed up with the Helen Keller National Center (HKNC) in New York City, Texas Tech University, the American Association of the Deaf-Blind, and the American Foundation for the Blind to offer the course.

CAEBER Summer Institute enhances ASL/English teaching practices

Educators from across the country were on Kendall Green from June 19 to July 2 to participate in the College of Professional Studies and Outreach’s Center for ASL/English Bilingual Education and Research’s (CAEBER) Summer Institute. The Institute, which provides four courses over two summers, trains participants to be on-site ASL/English Bilingual Professional Development (AEBPD) mentors at their respective schools/programs serving students who are deaf or hard of hearing, including students with cochlear implants.

Filmmakers take footage for PBS documentary

Wendy Wiatrowski and Maggie Gray are among several several members of the Gallaudet community who will appear in an upcoming PBS documentary, Becoming Helen Keller.

Wiatrowski, who is the Summer and Enrichment Programs coordinator in the College of Professional Studies, and Gray, a 10-year-old former KDES student, acted as hand models as a film crew shot footage in Gallaudet’s TV studio in the Merrill Learning Center.

Introducing Gallaudet University’s Adult Degree Program

Are you an adult with commitments – career, family, and community – who wants a college degree? A college degree may be available at your fingertips. Gallaudet University has made it possible for aspiring adult learners to earn their degree online and continue with normal life. There’s no need to uproot and relocate to go after your dream of earning a bachelor’s degree. Gallaudet University’s new and growing Adult Degree Program is for adult learners who have work, community and family obligations.

At present, there are two degree attainment avenues for adult learners at Gallaudet: The Adult Degree Completion Program (ADCP) and The online Adult Liberal Studies (ALS) Degree.

Maryland School for the Deaf wins 2010 National Academic Bowl

For the second time in school history, the Maryland School for the Deaf (MSD) in Frederick, Md., claimed victory at Gallaudet University’s National Academic Bowl championship tournament held April 25 to 26 in the University’s Kellogg Conference Hotel. This year’s Maryland team of Andrew Biskupiak, Todd Bonheyo, Christy Hediger, Asher Kirschbaum, and Ethan Sonnenstrahl soundly defeated the Metro Deaf School/Minnesota Star Academy team, which placed second among the 16 teams competing for the national title.

The Frederick team’s triumph comes as no surprise to many long-time Academic Bowl watchers. MSD has competed in the national championship eight times.

Introduction to Professional Coaching June 14-18, 2010

The International Coach Federation (ICF) defines coaching as partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential. In this introductory course on how to coach individuals, students learn primary distinctions; concepts and models that help coaches work effectively with individuals. In addition, potential coaches learn about the importance of working on the development of their professional coaching skills, and will be introduced to basic skills that can be expanded in successive courses or linked to certificate coaching programs in life or leadership.

Prerequisites: Bachelors degree and at least 5 years of education, training and/or professional experiences in coaching human resources, human services, leadership, organization development, counseling, deaf education, rehabilitation, or related fields; ASL fluency; permission of the instructor.
