United States will be vying for a chance to compete at the nationals in April 2009.

The first regional competition takes place starting February 12, 2009, at California School for the Deaf in Fremont.

CPSO Announces Spring 2009 Online and Professional Studies Courses

The College of Professional Studies and Outreach at Gallaudet University announces its Spring 2009 catalog of online and professional studies courses.

Professional Studies courses and certificate programs are offered in a variety of formats to students from all over the world. From traditional classroom settings to online or onsite instruction, these courses cover topics designed to meet your professional training needs or to provide you with general education opportunities.

Most courses carry university credit. Some offer regular graduate or undergraduate credit, while others offer professional studies, or non-degree, credit. Many courses offer a choice of credit type. While professional studies credit do not apply to degree programs at Gallaudet University, they may be transferable to other universities and will often satisfy requirements for certification and employment. In addition, some PST courses lead to a professional certificate.

Spring 2009 classes are being offered in the following categories: American Sign Language (ASL), Computer Applications, Education, Eye Movement Integration, Genetics, Interpreter Training, Language and Culture, Leadership, Peer Mentor Training, Social Work, Test Preparation, Tutorial and Instructional Programs, and Writing.

Project Management for Beginners Course Announced for Spring 2009

PST 639, Project Management for Beginners, 3 credits

Roger Kraft of Sioux Fall, SD will be teaching a new course for people who are responsible for managing projects.  In today’s corporate and non-profit world, while many traditional businesses are organized by function, there is a critical need for people to manage multiple projects across units to ensure these projects are successfully completed in terms of time, quality and cost.

Principles of project management will be covered in this intensive course taught on Gallaudet’s campus over two long weekends.  The nine project management bodies of knowledge (communication, human resources, risk, integration, scope, time, procurement, cost and quality) will be covered as well as the five stages of a project:  initiating, planning, executing, controlling, and closing.

Equipped with a working knowledge of PM principles, course attendees will be able to successful manage projects either individually or organization or institution-wide.  The 3-course is offered 3/27-29/09 and 4/24-26/09.  Tuition is $555.00.

Coming in Spring 2009 – Two Praxis Exam Prep Courses

Here are two new courses to help you prepare for the Praxis exam. They will be offered in Spring 2009.

PST 750, Praxis I Test Preparation: Reading

This course will provide you with the opportunity for skill improvement, strengthening of test-taking, sample test practice for the Reading section of the Praxis I: Pre-Professional Skills Assessment test.  You will work with the instructor to review strategies to understand, analyze, and evaluate written messages in a multiple choice format.

Dates: Thursdays, 4:40-6:30 2/10, 2/12, 2/17, 2/19, 2/24, 2/26, 3/3/09

Site: On campus

Instructor: Carie Palmer

Cost: Tuition is $185.00 plus $30.00 processing fee; waived if you are a full-time matriculated student

PST 751, Praxis I Test Preparation: Mathematics

This course will provide you with the opportunity for skill improvement, strengthening of test-taking, sample test practice for the mathematics section of the Praxis I: Pre-Professional Skills Assessment test.  Topics include problem solving, key concepts in mathematics, and how to reason in a quantitative way.

Dates: Saturdays, 9 am to 3 pm 3/14, 3/28, 4/4/09

Site: On campus

Instructor: Mark Phipps

Cost: Tuition is $185.00 plus $30.00 processing fee; waived if you are a full time matriculated student
