Attending the CAID Conference at Gallaudet University this Summer?

Register now for one of these 1-credit courses held the weekend prior to the CAID conference.

The Council of American Instructors of the Deaf (CAID), co-hosted by the Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center, will hold its national conference on June 22-26, 2009, at Gallaudet University.  The College of Professional Studies and Outreach is offering the following one-credit courses the weekend prior to the conference on June 20-21, from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm.

Legislation and Policy Affecting Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children. This course provides practitioners with an analysis of laws and policies that affect the education of deaf and hard of hearing children and ways they can be used to improve outcomes for these children. It incorporates a variety of activities to increase students’ knowledge of how to use these policies and laws to solve problems in their professional settings.  Instructor:  Barbara Raimondo, Esq.

ASL Discourse for Interpreters. This is an introductory course dealing with the grammatical and discourse-level structure of ASL with an emphasis on identifying features of ASL and addressing their relevance to interpretation.  Course topics include ASL grammar and syntax, turn taking, constructed action and constructed dialogue, and repair strategies.  This course is also offered for graduate credit.  Instructor:  Dr. Melanie Metzger.

Best Practices in Meeting the Needs of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Immigrant Students. This course addresses the growing demand from professionals working with Deaf and hard of hearing students who are immigrants, and/or children of immigrants. Topics for this preconference include communication and language development, working with immigrant families, older students with limited formal education, and instructional interventions and strategies for immigrant DHH students.  Instructor:  Dr. Barbara Gerner De Garcia.

Project Managment for Beginners Offered in April 2009

Coming in April 2009, Gallaudet University and Flagler College of St. Augustine, Florida, are sponsoring Project Management for Beginners, a 3-credit course presented in hybrid format of face-to-face and online. The initial face-to-face classroom work will occur on April 27-29, 2009, at Flagler College.
