This course, Legislation and Policy Affecting the Education of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children, provides practitioners with an analysis of laws and policies that affect the education of deaf and hard of hearing children and explore how these laws and policies can be used to improve outcomes for these children.
The course dates are July 27 – 31, 2009.
It will cover the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, the Elementary and Secondary Education Act/No Child Left Behind Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. It will outline the history and requirements of these laws, as well as the ways these laws have been interpreted through court decisions and state, local, and school practices. Students will do a variety of activities designed to increase their knowledge of these federal programs and policies and to use them to solve problems they have identified in their professional setting.
